Welcome to Confluence Writing Community

Find Your Flow. Find Your People. Find Your Place.

Here, writing is an act of connection. It's the place where the deep, quiet spring of your inner voice meets the wide, vibrant current of community. At Confluence Writing Community, I believe that the most powerful stories come from a place of authenticity—from the land, from the more-than-human world, and from the shared experiences that shape us.

This is a home for writers who seek a deeper connection to their work, their world, and each other. Whether you are just beginning or are a seasoned pro, Confluence offers a space of kindness, encouragement, excellent teaching, and thoughtful craft.

A Focus on the Whole Writer

I don't just teach craft; I nurture the complete writer. My workshops, coaching, and editing go beyond the page to address mindset, process, and finding the courage to share your most authentic work.

Writing from a Place of Kinship

My ethos is rooted in the belief that words are an act of connection with the land and its more-than-human inhabitants. I teach a unique, place-based approach to writing that fosters stewardship and deepens your sense of belonging in the world.

Community of Kindred Spirits

At Confluence, you'll find a supportive community of writers who understand your journey. My spaces are built on a foundation of kindness and mutual respect, ensuring every voice is welcomed and every story is heard.

Dedicated Support, From Idea to Publication

I offer a full spectrum of services designed to meet you at any stage of your journey. Whether you need a spark of inspiration, a coach to guide you through a project, or a professional editor to prepare your manuscript, I have the tools to help you succeed.

Craft is My Compass

My teaching is grounded in the fundamentals of craft. I provide clear, practical guidance on structure, voice, and style, giving you the skills you need to bring your creative vision to life with precision and power.

Strengthening Your Unique Voice

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. I see my role as a mirror, not a mold, reflecting your voice and style back to you so you can see it more clearly. My goal is to help you remove what's obstructing your natural voice and amplify what's already there, so you can write with greater confidence and power.

Hi, I’m CMarie

I am a author, poet, teacher, advocate, and human whose work is inspired by the Western landscape. As the founder of Confluence Writing Community, I am offering an alternative to traditional academic spaces—a place where people from all walks of life can gather to find their voice and cultivate their craft. I believe that writing comes from leading a full life, and that the earth needs more advocates, in all the ways they can write. To make this work accessible, I offer my courses on a sliding scale.

My professional experience is extensive, including my role as the Associate Director of Western Colorado University's Graduate Program in Creative Writing and my work as the director of the Elk River Writers Workshop. I am the author of Salmon Weather: Writing from the Land of No Return and the poetry chapbook Camped Beneath the Dam. I also co-edited two significant anthologies, Cascadia Field Guide: Art, Ecology, and Poetry and Native Voices: Indigenous Poetry, Craft, and Conversations.

My poetry and nonfiction are published or forthcoming in a variety of publications, including Terrain.org, Emergence Magazine, Alta Magazine, Northwest Review, Yellow Medicine Review, Poetry Northwest, Big Sky Journal, and various anthologies. I am an award-winning columnist for The Inlander, a former Idaho Writer in Residence, and the host of Colorado Public Radio's Terra Firma. I live and work in the Salmon River Mountains of Idaho, where I spend my summers as a fire lookout.
